Carter Whitt
Memorial Music Scholarship

Memorial Background (From Carter's Parents)
Our sweet boy Carter Whitt developed his vast and intense love of music in the Hickory Ridge Middle and High School programs. Nurtured by Mr. White, Mr. Rivero, Mr. Foster and so many other faculty, staff, and students, he found great joy in nearly every musical form and instrument.
He played all of the clarinets, guitars, trumpets, bass, etc., was dedicated to the Blue Regiment Marching Band, Jazz Band, all county and all district, state and so on. Less interested in being competitive, he wanted to play well & LOUD! He continued his great passion at UNC Chapel Hill playing in the Marching Tar Heels and in studio with Prof Mike Kris whom he deeply respected. He played tuba, sackbut (pre trombone), bass trombone, and lots of other instruments as the mood struck.
Carter fiercely battled mental illness until he passed in February 2025. We choose to be grateful for the extraordinary person he was for his 20 years of life and take comfort that he is at peace.
This annual scholarship is given by his family and friends to two graduating Hickory Ridge High School seniors who are in the HRHS band. We’d like the award to be used for any post-high school education, hopefully music related!
